Dorothy McGovern – 92


Dorothy H. McGovern, age 92, of Gaylord passed away on Thursday, December 23, 2010, at Oak Terrace Health Care Center in Gaylord. Funeral Services will be 11:00 a.m. Thurs., Dec. 30, 2010, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Gaylord, with interment in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery in Galesburg, Illinois, at a later date. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the time of service at the church. The Rev. Fredric Hinz will officiate.

Dorothy Henrietta (Reichenbach) McGovern was born on January 2, 1918, in Dryden Township, Sibley County. She was the daughter of Allie W. and Lydia (Boettcher) Reichenbach. Dorothy was baptized as an infant on January 27, 1918, by the Rev. E.H. Gade, and was later confirmed in her faith as a youth on April 26, 1931, by the Rev. Alfred R. Streufert, both at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Gaylord. Dorothy attended elementary classes at Immanuel Lutheran School and District #73 in Dryden Township, rural Gaylord. She then attended Gaylord High School and later graduated from Mankato Commercial College.

On May 25, 1940, Dorothy was united in marriage to Joseph S. McGovern in Rochester. After their marriage, the couple briefly lived in Mankato. They moved to Chicago, where Joseph was employed by the Chicago West Pullman and Southern Railroad. Dorothy held employment in Chicago, Illinois, for numerous companies, including IBM, retiring in 1971. In 1972, Dorothy and Joseph moved back to Gaylord. Dorothy and Joseph shared 37 years of marriage.

Dorothy was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Gaylord, and had been active with the Ladies Aid, Altar Guild, and Lakeview Home Auxiliary.

Dorothy enjoyed crafts and needlework. She especially loved traveling to Florida, Arizona, Alaska, Hawaii and Europe. 

Dorothy is survived by her cousins, Albert Meyer, Jr. of Gaylord, Rueben Meyer and his wife, Bonnie of Gaylord, Edward Reichenbach and his wife, Diane of Venice, FL, and Adell Holm of Palm Harbor, FL; aunt, Viola Reichenbach of Gaylord and other relatives and friends.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, and husband, Joseph McGovern in 1977.
