Superintendent’s salary to remain the same for two years

Sibley East’s Board of Education, Monday night, approved a contract with Stephen Jones to serve as Superintendent of Schools from July 1, 2010 to June 30, 2012.

The contract was approved 4-1, with board member Brian Asmus casting the lone dissenting vote. School board member Tim Dolan was not in attendance at the meeting when the contract was addressed.

Last month, Jones’ contract was removed from the school board’s consent agenda. The school board later tabled the contract until Monday’s meeting.

For the 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 school years, the superintendent’s salary will remain at $115,000 and that he will receive health insurance. For the 2009-2010 school year, Jones was paid an annual salary of $115,000. Since the school district did not provide health insurance for the superintendent the first year, he was given an additional $10,000 in salary.

Last month, school district attorney Tony Nerud said that Sibley East saved approximately $4,500 this past year with Jones not participating in the health insurance benefit. For the next two years, Jones has chosen to participate in the district health insurance plan. Nerud estimated the insurance package costs approximately $16,000 annually. However, he added that there would be savings with Jones taking the health insurance instead of the additional $10,000 salary with social security and medicare.

School board chairperson Anne Karl stated that the negotiations committee met with Jones last month, to discuss the contract.
