School board member resigns after theft charge

Sibley East School Board member Jodi Hanson of Gaylord has submitted a letter of resignation to the school board. It will be considered at the school board meeting Monday night in Arlington.

According to Superintendent Stephen Jones, Hanson tendered a resignation letter Thursday.

A former Gaylord Girl Scout leader, Hanson, of 114 Franklin Ave., was charged last month with theft and made her first appearance in court here Monday.

She was charged with temporarily taking $457.20 in fundraiser proceeds from Gaylord Girl Scout Troop 30808. She served as leader of the troop in 2008 and 2009.

Hanson will make her next court appearance in McLeod County. A date has not yet been determined.

According to the criminal complaint, Hanson admitted to a McLeod County investigator that she deposited the Girl Scout troop’s sale proceeds into her personal bank account at First National Bank in Gaylord. On Feb. 22, 2010, Hanson repaid the $457.20 to the Girl Scouts.

Hanson is employed as a dispatcher/correctional officer for the Sibley County Sheriff’s Department. She began part-time employment there in Jan. 17, 2002 and became a full-time employee on July 1, 2005.

She had served on the Sibley East Board of Education since 2004 and had served as clerk the past two years.

If convicted, the maximum penalty is 90 days in jail and/or $1,000 fine.

The case was investigated and is being prosecuted by McLeod County, due to potential conflict of interest because of Hanson’s employment at the Sibley County Sheriff’s Office.
