A 16-hit attack powered Sibley East’s baseball team in non-conference action Friday. The Wolverines scored runs in five of seven at-bats enroute to a 12-10 victory at Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop.
Nathan Henke and Lucas Herd led the Sibley East charge with three hits and two RBI’s apiece. Michael Bullert, Justin Rettmann and Jesse Schwirtz each had two hits for the winners.
Both teams plated three runs in the first inning. Rettmann’s double highlighted Sibley East’s half of the inning.
Sparked by Brock St. John’s double, the Wolverines took an 8-3 lead in the top of the third inning. But, GFW answered with five runs in the bottom of the frame.
Sibley East broke the 8-8 tie with a pair of runs in the fifth inning. Consecutive singles by Schwirtz, Bullert and Henke sparked the scoring.
GFW answered again, this time with two runs in the sixth frame. Michael Hahn sparked the at-bat with a double and a run scored.
Sibley East then capped the shootout with two runs in the seventh inning. Singles by Henke, Lucas Herd, Zach Borchert and Eric Schultz fueled the game winning rally.
Borchert also earned the mound win. He set down the Thunderbirds in order in the seventh frame. Herd, McKoy Rodning and Schultz combined to pitch the first 5-1/3 innings for Sibley East.
