Ellsworth W. Thies, age 79, of Gaylord, passed away Tuesday, April 13, 2010, at Oak Terrace Health Care Center in Gaylord. Funeral Services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 16, 2010, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Gaylord, with interment in the church cemetery. Full Military Rites will be performed by the Manthey-Asmus American Legion Post #433. Visitation will be 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Thursday, April 15, 2010, and 7:30 a.m. – 8:30 a.m. Friday, April 16, 2010, at Egesdal Funeral Home in Gaylord. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the services at the church. Memorials preferred. The Rev. Bill Nelsen will officiate.

Ellsworth William Thies was born on June 29, 1930, in Kelso Township, Sibley County. He was the son of William and Selma (Schmidt) Thies. Ellsworth was baptized as an infant and later confirmed in his faith as a youth. He received his education at Country School in Sibley County. He received his G.E.D. through the Gaylord High School.

Ellsworth entered the U.S. Army on January 19, 1952, and served his country with the 118 Engineers, 7th Division in Germany, during the Korean War. He received the Occupation Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. Ellsworth received his Honorable Discharge on February 29, 1960.

On September 1, 1957, Ellsworth was united in marriage to Elaine Tews at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Acoma Township, McLeod County.

The couple farmed in Kelso Township. He held employment at the Post Office and New Auburn Mutual Insurance in Gaylord, retiring on January 1, 1998. He was also on the Board of Directors at New Auburn Mutual Insurance.

Ellsworth and Elaine shared 52 years of marriage and were blessed with four children.

Ellsworth was a lifetime member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Gaylord, and served as past treasurer, on the church council and on cemetery board. He was also a member of the Manthey-Asmus American Legion Post #433 and the Senior Citizen’s Club in Gaylord.

Ellsworth enjoyed playing cards, traveling, and fishing. He especially loved the time he spent with his family and grandchildren.

When he needed assistance with his daily care, Ellsworth became a resident of Oak Terrace Health Care Center in Gaylord on January 5, 2010, and passed away there on Tuesday, April 13, 2010, at the age of 79 years. Blessed be his memory.

Ellsworth is survived by his wife, Elaine Thies of Gaylord; children, Sharalyn Land and her husband, Arlyn of Kulm, ND, Cynthia Bock and her husband, Gerald of Baxter, Kevin Thies and his wife, Kathleen of Arlington, and Sandra Kleist and her husband, Gary of Brainerd; 14 grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Bonnie Thies, Evelyn Hellwig, and Bea Tews; brother-in-law, Marvin Tews; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Ellsworth was preceded in death by his parents, William and Selma Thies; brother, Willard Thies; in-laws, Alfred and Lydia Tews, Harold Tews, Arnold Tews, Carl Hellwig, and Cora Tews.
