Prairie line will receive $5 million for rail upgrades

The Minnesota Valley Regional Rail Authority was again fortunate to have received state funding to upgrade the Minnesota Prairie Line.

The Rail Authority was notified Monday that $5 million was included in the state’s Capital Investment Bill, which was signed into law by Gov. Tim Pawlenty. The funding would provide funds to install heavier rail on about 10 miles of the 94-mile railroad, which runs from Norwood Young America to Hanley Falls.

Pawlenty used line-item veto authority to reduce the general obligation bonding in the bill from $999 million to $680 million.

Two area appropriation requests that were line-item vetoed were $1,908,000 to design a Clinical Science Building at Minnesota State University, Mankato and $12,000,000 to the City of Mankato to design, construct, furnish, and equip the expansion of the Civic Center auditorium.
