Lady Wolverines to be counting on quickness

Small, but quick. That has been the label attached to this season’s Sibley East’s girls’ basketball team which kicked off preseason conditioning drills last week in Arlington.

Sibley East will open its 2009-2010 campaign on Monday, November 30th at Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop. The first home game for Sibley East is set for December 11th.

Seven letterwinners return for the Lady Wolverines from a team which showed improvement a year ago.

Senior Marie Rose headlines the list of returning letterwinners. The co-captain led Sibley East last season in rebounding. She was also among team leaders in scoring.

Senior Erin Evans, another returning letterwinner, will also serve as co-captain this season for Sibley East.

Other returning letterwinners include seniors Kayla Trocke, Courtney Nienaber, Ashley Thomes and Lauren Keithahn, and junior Val Kloeckl.

Last season, with a team already short on height, Sibley East posted a 13-11 record overall. The Lady Wolverines were 7-7 in Minnesota River Conference (MRC) play. They were tipped by top seed Norwood Young America 45-44 in the sub-section semifinals.

Lost to graduation were Ashley Martens, Lindsay Thomes and Sammy Trebesch. All three girls spent time playing post positions for the Wolverines.

Doug Flieth is entering his second season as head coach. He said his team had some success last year and wants to go even further this season.

“Our strengths this year will be our quickness and returning experience,” coach Flieth said. “For us to be successful, we need to apply pressure on defense and shoot well on the offensive end. We are very small but make up for it with quickness.”

Other Lady Wolverines on the preseason roster, grades 9-12, include:

Seniors: Melinda Haupt and Mari Haraldsen;

Juniors: Megan Heibel, Kelsey Sunvold and Katie Glisczinski;

Sophomores: Emily Bullert, Jenna White, Megan Bennett, Lauren Highland, Vicki Riebe, Sonja Sprandel and Hannah Larson;

Ninth-graders: Jordan Thomes, Courtney Schwirtz, Morgan Setterman and Briana Reierson;

Sibley East will tip off its conference schedule December 8th at Holy Family. Coach Flieth said the MRC is “wide open.” He listed Holy Family, Jordan and Le Sueur-Henderson as the preseason favorites but expects his Wolverines to be “right there with them.”

Flieth will be assisted again this season by Chip Wolverton.
