Softball team loses to LSH in a shootout

There was no shortage of runs for Sibley East’s softballers Monday but defensive woes cost the Lady Wolverines a 12-8 season opening loss to visiting Le Sueur-Henderson.

Playing shorthanded and coming off a week of limited practices due to spring break, Sibley East head coach Rod Tollefson said he didn’t know what to expect.

“We definitely have some things to work on but overall the girls played pretty well,” Tollefson said. “Hopefully we can correct our mistakes and get on the winning track this week.”

Sibley East bounced back from an early deficit and were never out of the Minnesota River Conference (MRC) tilt.

LSH struck first with four runs in the second inning but the lead for the Giants would not last long.

Sparked by a hit from Ashley Salisbury, the Wolverines answered with five runs in the bottom half of the second frame. There were eleven Sibley East batters in the inning. Salisbury, Kelsey Sunvold, Lauren Keithahn, Kenzie Bade and Courtney LeGare all circled the bases for Sibley East in the rally.

LSH would regain the lead for good in the fourth inning. The first three Giants to bat in that frame reached safely and eventually scored.

Sibley East got one run back in the bottom of the fourth when Kayla Trocke reached base and scored.

But, the Giants would slowly pull away scoring two more runs in the fifth inning and three more in their seventh inning at-bat.

Sibley East scored its final two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Sunvold highlighted that at-bat with a double. She scored in the inning as did Angie Johnson.

Sunvold, a sophomore, pitched the entire game for the Wolverines. Other starters included Trocke (cf), Paige Swenson (c), Lindsay Thomes (ss), Keithahn (1b), Johnson (lf), Bade (2b), Salisbury (3b) and LeGare (rf). Other Wolverines who played in the contest were Hailey Becker and Brielle Giesen.

Official hitting and pitching statistics from the game were unavailable.

Sibley East, 0-1, will play at Mayer Lutheran on Thursday, then host McLeod West on Friday. The Lady Wolverines will play at Le Center/Cleveland on Saturday. They will then host Holy Family on Tuesday, April 21st.
