Hiring of new superintendent not yet official

Sibley East hasn’t hired a new superintendent yet. Stephen Jones, superintendent/high school principal at Murray County Central in Slayton, who was offered a contract to be Sibley East’s Superintendent of Schools beginning July 1, has not made a decision whether or not to sign the contract.

School board chairman Brian Asmus, at Monday’s school board meeting, said that Jones had called him earlier in the day, and out of professional courtesy, will be meeting with the Murray County Central School Board. Asmus said he would be notified Thursday whether or not he will accept the position at Sibley East.

Jones has one year remaining on his contract at Murray County Central, according to Sibley East officials. He had verbally accepted Sibley East’s offer last week.

Sibley East’s Board of Education had planned to act on Jones’ contract Monday. A school board committee had negotiated it with him Saturday.

Asmus said that if Jones does not accept the position, the school board will be calling a special meeting to discuss the next step in the superintendent search. Asmus also said that it was the school board’s goal to reach an agreement with the new superintendent with the wages to be at the same level or slightly below that of Sibley East’s superintendent.

Sibley East Superintendent John Langenbrunner notified the school board in November that he did not plan to renew his contract after it expires June 30. He has been superintendent here four years.
