The former Sibley East School District’s transportation director charged with five counts of first degree criminal sexual conduct is now facing more charges.
Kevin David Jones, 48, was charged this past week for allegedly violating a restraining order. He appeared in Sibley County’s District Court Monday.
Last fall, Jones was charged after allegedly having a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old girl from the fall of 2006 through the spring of 2008. He had served as the student’s transportation director at school, as bus driver for her athletic events, and as a supervisor during the girl’s summer employment at the school.
As a condition of his release last fall, Jones was not to have any contact with the victim. Other conditions were to pay bail of $5,000 cash or $50,000 bond, keep court and attorney informed of current address, and remain law abiding.
According to the complaint, the alleged victim notified the Sibley County Sheriff’s Office Thursday evening that she had been contacted by Jones via computer. The Sheriff’s Office then received a telephone call from Jones on February 28th and he admitted that he had contacted the victim. Jones was arrested Sunday afternoon.
Jones, as of Tuesday afternoon, was in the Sibley County Jail. On Monday, bail was set for an additional $50,000 cash or $500,000 bond. The County prosecutor recommended a larger bail ($25,000 for felony impersonating another to contact a juvenile and $50,000 for felony violating restraining order and violating conditions of release.) Jones is to remain law abiding and make all future court appearances, have no contact (direct or indirect) with the victim of the alleged offense, report changes of home and/or work address and telephone number to the court and attorney, and to maintain contact with the attorney as requested.
Jones has been charged with violating a restraining order while falsely impersonating another and violating a restraining order when the victim is under 18. The maximum penalty for each count is five years in jail and/or $10,000 fine. Jones will make his second court appearance on the restraining order violations on March 12th at 1 p.m.
A settlement conference for the criminal sexual conduct case is also set for March 12th. A jury trial is scheduled for March 24th.
Jones was placed on paid leave of absence as Sibley East’s transportation director in October, 2008 and was terminated by the Board of Education two months later. He had been employed by the school district nine years.
