SE volleyballers open season Monday at GFW

Another season of Sibley East volleyball is underway as the Lady Wolverines began preparing for the 2008 season last week in Gaylord.

Sibley East’s volleyballers will open their season Monday, August 25th against Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop, one of the top teams in Class A. The non-conference match will be played in Fairfax. According to Sibley East athletic director Randy Walsh, work is being done on GFW’s gymnasium in Winthrop.

An experienced and athletic team returns for Sibley East this season. The Wolverines will try to build off last season when they posted a record of 9-18-1.

A group of nine letterwinners return for coach Chip Wolverton and the Sibley East squad. Headlining the list of returning letterwinners are seniors Ashley Martens, Lindsay Thomes, Megan Meyer, Abby Sharp and Ashley Salisbury.

Other returning letterwinners for the Wolverines include: juniors Erin Evans, Megan Mahon and Marie Rose, and sophomore Val Kloeckl.

“We have a lot of experience returning in some key positions,” coach Wolverton said.

According to Wolverton, his team’s strengths will be serving and defense. Blocking, good quality attacks and consistency are areas the squad needs to improve on to be successful, he explained.

Inconsistent play slowed the Lady Wolverines last season. At times, the squad match up well against the top teams but poor stretches of play eventually proved to be the difference.

Wolverton said a lot of focus this preseason is on becoming more consistent as a team. With a more experienced squad, Wolverton is expecting his team to play at a higher level of consistency.

Sibley East had a chance to work on its consistent play last Friday in a scrimmage at Nicollet. More scrimmaging is on tap for the Lady Wolverines this Friday. They will travel to Glencoe-Silver Lake for a six team jamboree. Other schools scheduled to be at this scrimmage include GFW, Hutchinson, Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted and Norwood Young America.

It will be another challenging Minnesota River Conference schedule for Sibley East this season. Defending MRC champ Jordan, led by standout Brittany Chambers, is ranked #1 in Class AA. Belle Plaine and Le Sueur-Henderson are ranked #5 and #6 respectively in Class AA. Mayer Lutheran meanwhile is ranked #5 in Class A.

Sibley East will open its MRC schedule on Tuesday, August 26th at Holy Family. The first home game for the Wolverines is set for Sept. 15th against Minnesota Valley Lutheran.
