Sibley East pole vault standout Laura Schuneman broke her own conference record Thursday in the Minnesota River Conference (MRC) meet at Belle Plaine.
Schuneman, a junior, finished first and earned all-conference honors with a pole vault of 10’-2”. That broke her previous conference record of 10-feet set last season.
Schuneman was Sibley East’s lone first place finisher. The Lady Wolverines finished seventh in the MRC meet with 69 team points. Belle Plaine captured top honors with a score of 147.
“This meet was highly competitive and our girls ran and jumped consistently or better than previous meets,” Sibley East coach Jill Kmetz said. “It was a battle for points the entire meet.”
Wolverines Jenni Heibel and Erin Farber joined Schuneman with season best efforts. Heibel, a senior captain, finished third in the 800 meter run with a season best clocking of 2:27. She was one second behind the leaders – two seventh-graders from Belle Plaine.
Farber, sophomore, recorded a career best throw in the shot put. Her toss of 36-feet was a foot shy of the winning mark.
It was a second place finish for Sibley East’s Ashley Martens. The junior was runnerup in the triple jump with a leap of 35’-7”. Chelsea Fogarty of Belle Plaine won the event with a jump of 35’-10”.
