Islanders to practice Sunday at Walsh Field

The baseball season will be in full swing here Sunday when the Gaylord Islanders amateur baseball team hosts its first practice of the season.

Gaylord manager Mike Walsh announced this week that practices will be held at 2:00 p.m the next three Sundays. He invites anyone interested in playing for the Islanders to the practice sessions.

Walsh, a 1977 Gaylord High School graduate and former player for the Islanders, is embarking on his second season as the team’s manager. In Walsh’s inaugural campaign, the Islanders posted an 8-16 record. They were knocked out of the section playoffs by Arlington.

A 24-game season is on tap for Gaylord. The Islanders will open their 2007 campaign at Victoria (2:00) on Sunday, May 13th. The first home game for Gaylord will be against Watertown on Friday, May 18th (7:30).

One highlight of the 2007 schedule is a three game jamboree with Chisago Lakes and Kasson. These two teams will face each other, then play the Islanders at Walsh Field on Saturday, June 16th.

Former Gaylord manager and Sibley East teacher Dan Hamann is a member of the Chisago Lakes team. Matt Franke meanwhile plays for Kasson. He is the son of Gaylord High School graduates Roger and Cindy (Walsh) Franke.

Gaylord’s Islanders will again compete in the Carver Central League. Other teams in the league include: Arlington, Belle Plaine, Brownton, Carver, Chaska, Jordan, Le Sueur, Prior Lake, St. Peter, Shakopee, Victoria, Winthrop and Waconia.
