Helen Swenson, age 90, of St. Peter and formerly of rural Gaylord, passed away on Friday, September 15, 2006, at the St. Peter Health Care Center.

Funeral Services were held Monday, September 18 at the Norwegian Grove Lutheran Church in Sibley Township, Sibley County. The Rev. Craig A. Ferkenstad officiated. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Helen Dorthy (Engholm) Swenson was born on November 26, 1915, in Lafayette. She was the daughter of Erik and Esther (Erickson) Engholm. Helen was baptized as an infant on February 16, 1916, and was later confirmed in her faith as a youth on June 1, 1930, both at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winthrop. She attended District #68 school, graduating from the 8th grade on July 9, 1932.

Helen was united in marriage to Selwen Swenson on August 31, 1952, at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winthrop. After their marriage, they farmed in Sibley Township. The couple stayed on the farm after retirement until 2000, when they moved into Amberfield Apartments in Gaylord. When Helen needed assistance with her daily care, she became a resident at the St. Peter Health Care Center in St. Peter. The couple shared 52 years of marriage before Selwen passed away on May 18, 2005.

Helen was a longtime member of the Norwegian Grove Lutheran Church, Sibley Township, Sibley County, where she was active, in the past, with the Ladies Aid. Helen loved spending time with her family. She also enjoyed cooking and gardening.

Helen is survived by her cousins, Dennis Berman and his wife, Carol of North St. Paul, Lynette Schmidt and her husband, Jack of South Dakota, Marriane Ahl and her husband, Swen of Vejbystrand, Sweden andCarol Oxelgren of Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada; sister-in-law, Beatrice Enter of Gaylord; nephew, Harland Nelson and his wife Cheryl of St. Peter; nieces, Cheri Birkholz and her husband, the Reverend Marc of Oak Park Heights and Valerie Landon and her husband, Ty of rural Gaylord; foster nephew and niece, Tony Kostecky and his wife, LeNae of Detroit Lakes, and Cindy Kostecky of Richfield; and several great nieces, great nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Helen is preceded in death by her parents, Erik and Esther Engholm; husband, Selwen Swenson; sisters-in-law, Marie Nelson and Alfild Swenson at the age of 4 years; nephews, Lyndon Nelson and Delmont Enter; and brothers-in-law, Leslie Enter and Arden Nelson.

Honorary Casket Bearers were great-nieces and great-nephews Shelley Martini, Brigette LeDell, Gretta Nelson, Chellsea Nelson, Wink Landon, Les Landon, Nathan Birkholz, Joshua Birkholz, Micah Birkholz, Elizabeth Walters, and Gabriel Kostecky.

Casket Bearers were Harland Nelson, Eric Nelson, Ty Landon, Tony Kostecky, Bob Briard, and Reverend Marc Birkholz.
