Legion team bows out in semifinals of wood bat tourney


Sibley East’s American Legion Baseball team won three of four games this past weekend in a wooden bat tournament at Winsted.

Sibley East reached the semifinals with victories over Holy Family, Holy Trinity and Plato. The black and gold was then bounced from the tournament with a 7-4 loss to eventual champion Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop.

S.E. 4 GFW 7

Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop scored four runs in its first at-bat and three runs in its final at-bat Sunday to defeat Sibley East 7-4.

Sibley East held a brief 1-0 lead. Shane Henke opened the game with a double and eventually scored on an error.

GFW responded with four runs in the bottom of the first. Five singles and a double fueled the rally.

Matt Rettmann’s double cut GFW’s lead to 4-2 in the second inning. Sibley East then knotted the score in the fifth frame. Singles by Brett Pioske, Josh Gasow, Jake Pichelmann and Derek Berger fueled the two run rally.

GFW regained the lead in the sixth inning. Four straight hits including a triple sparked the decisive at-bat.

Pioske and Pichelmann led Sibley East in the loss with two hits apiece. Other Sibley East players recording hits included Henke, Gasow, Berger, Rettmann, Tyler Gasow and Zach Herd.

Pichelmann was tagged with the mound loss. He yielded ten hits and struckout eight in six innings of work.

S.E. 10 Plato 0

Josh Gasow recorded seven RBI’s Saturday to lead Sibley East’s Legion baseballers to a 10-0 win over Plato.

Gasow cranked out three doubles and a single in four at-bats. All three of his doubles knocked in multiple runs for Sibley East.

Sibley East scored three times in each the first and second innings. Gasow knocked in five of those runs.

It was another three run at-bat for Sibley East in the fifth inning. Gasow added another two run double in the inning while Shane Henke knocked in a run with a double.

Brett Pioske and Zach Herd also enjoyed multiple hit games for Sibley East. Henke and Jake Pichelmann added one hit apiece.

S.E. 3 Holy Trinity 0

Pitcher Shane Henke spun a three hit shutout Saturday to lead Sibley East to a 3-0 victory over Holy Trinity.

Henke helped his own cause in the first inning. He opened the game with a single which was followed by a Zach Herd basehit. Both runners would score on Jake Pichelmann’s double.

Sibley East picked up its third run in the fourth inning when Dan Bigaouette singled and scored.

Sibley East players recording hits in the win included Henke, Herd, Pichelmann, Bigaouette, Brett Pioske, Josh Gasow, Tyler Gasow and Matt Rettmann.

S.E. 4 Holy Family 3

Sibley East scored three runs in the sixth inning Friday enroute to a 4-3 victory over Holy Family in the opening round of the wood bat tournament.

Derek Berger provided what proved to be the game winning hit. His sixth inning double gave the Wolverines a 4-2 advantage. Holy Family scored a run in the seventh frame but had the potential tying run thrown out at home plate.

Zach Herd led Sibley East in the win with two singles. Others recording hits for Sibley East included Berger, Matt Rettmann, Tyler Gasow, Josh Gasow and Shane Henke.

Berger was also the winning pitcher. He allowed nine hits and struckout three in seven innings of work.
